Composing A Research Paper: How To Write The Introduction And Literature Review
A research paper is a big deal; there is a strict format and a proper pattern of writing to be followed. Unlike a high school essay, a paper takes a lot more effort to be proven a success. Not only do the author’s marks depend on it, so does the impression created on the professor going through it and any institution looking into it. Hence, suffice to say, a paper is a very important thing in a student’s life.
The introduction of any piece of writing is, perhaps, the most vital portion of the writing. It introduces the topic of research to the reader. Hence, it is also responsible for creating a lasting impression on the reader. Thus, it should have the following factors in place:
- The pattern of writing should be formal and curt. Frilly details and flowery language should be avoided as a research paper is a formal and serious piece of writing.
- The introduction should have the topic or hypothesis clearly explained and elaborated upon. The aspects being dealt with in the hypothesis should be highlighted upon.
- There should also be statistical or numerical values attached to the explanation to give a face to the facts mentioned in the research paper. Numerical figures always tend to add weight to the research paper.
A literature review should always involve the literary devices that have been illustrated in the literary writing on which the research has been based on. That forms the crux of the research paper. Other parts of the review should include the personal life of the eminent literary persona, his reasons for penning down the literary work and his inspiration behind it. The connection of that particular work to any other work by the same writer, if any, should also be mentioned and explained, as well as the critical reception.
A literary review should always include a critical analysis of the piece of literary work being reviewed. This is one of the musts for a literary review. A literary review, by virtue of its dealing with the literary aspect of a language, should also be perfect in the lingual aspect. In other words, the author of the review should see to it that spelling and grammar are perfect. Simple, a formal format and a sharp style of writing should be maintained.
